Upon completion of this module, you should be able to distinguish between actual yield and theoretical yield and determine the percent yield in stoichiometry problems. Theoretical yield is defined as the amount of product that would result if all the limiting reagent reacted. The actual yield is the amount of product obtained in the laboratory from a reaction. The percent yield is defined as the actual yield divided by the theoretical yield, then multiplied by 100. Often the actual yield is less than the theoretical value; therefore, the percent yield is often lower than 100%.
